Stability of cellulose-based carriers in batch and packed-bed reactors

Abstract: The selection of a suitable type of reactor for the reaction with enzymes immobilized on the carriers is extremely important to industry. In this study the possibility of using pre-selected cellulose-based carriers (Granocel) to conduct the reaction in a stirred batch reactor and a fixed-bed reactor was investigated. It was shown that non-activated Granocel did not undergo compression or crushing, so it was suitable for both types of reactors tested. Granocel activated with divinylsulphone can be used in the packed-bed reactor, but after earlier stabilization of the bed, and in the stirred reactor, but in a volume close to 50% of the reactor volume. Granocel activated with glutaraldehyde is not suitable for use in packed-bed reactors, because of its susceptibility to compression. It can be applied in a stirred reactor, but only in a volume close to 50% of the reactor volume.
